Today, DH (a new friend from the area) and I went out to lunch and then did some shopping. We both belong to a group called Womenade here in SLO. The organization is a direct charity which uses money collected at periodic pot luck dinners, to help people in need in the county. The money is used to pay for children's dental appointments (not covered by Medi-Cal) and many other financial needs. The organizer does all the coordinating and is connected with the many social agencies in the county. There are also many situations where Womenade hears of special family need situations.
One of these families is not a real family but more of a foster care situation. A nurse and her family over the last 25 to 30 years, have taken into their home, very sick children who have no one else to take care of them. With all the red tape often the family has difficulty getting assistance from the state, county or city.
DH was able to get a list of needs the family has at this time. She and I went shopping to fulfill the list for the children - mostly pajamas, a few toys and CDs. We had a great time shopping together and looking for toys and feeling good about the shopping. We also shopped for groceries on a list put together by St. Barnabas and the Christian Women's organization of the Five Cities area for holiday meal fixings this Christmas.
We delivered all the "foster family's" things to Womenade in SLO.
