Recently a new section of the California Coastal Trail http://www.coastal.ca.gov/access/ctrail-access.htmlwas dedicated in Shell beach, just down the road from the rental house we had in early December when we first moved out here. About 50% of the coastline has been open as trail. This coast section has a section of volcanic rocks that are populated by pelicans every year. The tops of every rock formation are covered with pelicans or cormorants. They don't appear to mix too well with each species occupying a different rock top.
Along the beach is a park called the Dinosaur Caves Park http://www.dinosaurcavespark.org/which is a misnomer as there were never any dinosaur bones found there. There were caves below and an enterprising person tried to build a concrete dinosaur as an attraction with an entrance leading to steps that would take you down to the caves along the shore. The dinosaur was damaged in a fire in the 70s and was demolished. Most of the caves have been washed away but there are still a few you can explore at low tide. There is a playground at the park with many sea animals and dinosaur eggs for children to climb or explore. Here's a dinosaur egg that K will enjoy!
