Many parts of California are very focused on going green. This week the local synagogue, Congregation Beth David in SLO is the first temple in the nation to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
Congregation Beth David recently received LEED certification for its new temple, making it the first new construction commercial building project in the county to earn the designation by the U. S. Green Building Council. The group formulated the LEED point-based system to identify buildings that meet certain environmental standards.
The U. S. Green Building Council reported Beth David was one of eight groups in the county to recently seek out certification. The temple is the first synagogue in the nation to reach LEED certification. There are only 1,585 commercial projects LEED certified nationwide, with an additional 12,206 developments are in the process of obtaining certification.
I'm not sure if a LEED designation is incentive enough for most construction to aim for greeness but we all need some motivation to decrease our energy consumption.
In other news - the local paper reported that a Prius driven by a local judge was rammed into by a fleeing vehicle. The Prius (and the judge and his wife) was flipped over and landed on top of a Mazda Protege. All the airbags in the Prius deployed and only the judge received minor cuts, and the police caught the perp because his license plate fell off his car when it hit the Prius. Here's a picture. It's great to see that the Prius stood up to this wreck as we own 2 of them. K owns a Protege! The judge said he was sad to see all the damage to his 2005 Prius.
