Mid-state fair

T and I went to the Mid-state fair in Paso Robles yesterday. We chose yesterday because the weather forecast had the mildest temperatures for that area for yesterday. The rest of the time the temps are supposed to be in the 100s and I really can't stand the heat! Unfortunately the animals were nowhere to be seen. There was a huge bull (looked like a Brahman bull) and a bunch of heifers in one section. There was supposed to be a pig parade that afternoon but we couldn't find it. The fair had six buildings with all sorts of exhibits. Some were the standard fair items for sale and some had the judged events flowers, quilts and other fabric crafts, baked goods, art (painting and photography) for all age groups. There was a section with wildlife displays of tortoises, turtles, snakes and other amphibians. There were 4H and FFA (future farmers of America) displays everywhere. We watched a horse cutting event which was a judged event. The midway had the typical food and souvenirs for sale and of course there were the carnival booths and rides. The Big E in New England is much more impressive. Of course this is just one of the local county fairs. I understand the California State fair takes place in Sacramento but I don't know when.

We drove back to AG for dinner which was a great idea as once dinner was done we were almost home. Paso is about 50 minutes from us. The route takes us over the Cuesta Grade which is a much larger version of Avon Mountain. My Prius got almost 50 mpg on the trip! The temps were in the low 90s at the fair and my understanding is that it was in the upper 60s here. We were glad to have gone and are so glad that we didn't buy our house north of the grade!
