Conservatism

Today was Ladies Who Lunch day. We had a robust group of 7 ladies - 1 of them was a new person. We talked about many topics and I try very hard to steer the conversation away from the dread three - Sex, Politics and Religion. Two of us were talking about the next Womenade potluck dinner that we are co-hosting. We had come up with an idea to ask attendees to donate much needed school supplies for our elementary school as the budgets have been severely slashed and the teachers are digging deeper and deeper into their pockets to do their jobs. This new person stated that the school is filled with immigrant children who are already getting huge handouts from the government and never are satisfied with all they are receiving. She claimed that they just wanted more and more for free and she wasn't in favor of giving anymore to support these people since she was already paying so much to support them. I was really taken aback and couldn't help thinking - "who invited her anyway?" "aren't you living off government support with your social security and medicare?" etc. - You get the drift. You can't change these people and I guess she won't be bringing any school supplies to the potluck dinner.
