On earthquakes

So this morning we had our first "feelable" earthquake in our area. The local news station reported the following: "A light earthquake occurred Saturday morning in northern San Luis Obispo County.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 4.4 quake hit at 5:32 a.m. The USGS says the epicenter was 10 miles northeast of Cambria, 15 miles west of Paso Robles and 8 miles south of Lake Nacimiento.

It was felt as far south as Arroyo Grande and Santa Maria. People near the quake say it felt like a strong jolt.

The Paso Robles Police department has received several calls from residents, but has no reports of any damage. The Paso Robles and Cambria fire departments also have no reports of any damage."

T was awake at the time but I slept right through it. People were talking about the last larger earthquake in the are about 6 years ago which did a lot of damage in Paso Robles and led to many retrofitting laws being passed. The deadline for the retrofitting has come and gone and almost every building that was deemed needing retrofitting has been completed. It doesn't mean that they won't have damage but hopefully, will help protect people so they can escape the building before it has to be demolished.
