We are in one of our busy "social" cycles where we have many nights of dining out. There was a volunteer appreciation dinner for the Thrift Shop volunteers on Saturday night with an amazing dinner put on by our 82 year old manager. She planned the entire event and with the help of some of the volunteers, decorated the church hall with a beach theme, every table had sea shells and a local beach name. The average age of the volunteers is about 78! She had a wonderful barbeque spread with pork loin, chicken, baked beans, salad, garlic bread and ice cream cups for dessert!
Last night was a volunteer training meeting at the Clark Center with a pot luck dinner. We had the opportunity to meet many of the other volunteers we haven't worked with yet.
Tonight we're heading to P&S's for dinner with them and a couple of their friends. I found a pork shoulder with skin on at the local Cookie Crock grocery store. Cookie Crock is one of those warehouse lower cost stores and caters to the local Mexican and senior population. Pork shoulder with skin on is a staple in Mexican cuisine and always available there and nowhere else! On Sunday another dinner with K&C who are coming down from Monterey.

And how does one prepare pork shoulder with skin on?
Te pang is a traditional Chinese dish - shoulder is boiled, then briefly fried, then simmered either whole or in chunks in a soy, wine, water combo with 5 spices, garlic, ginger, pepper and star anise until tender.
