8.9 earthquake in Japan

Last night there was an 8.9 earthquake in Japan. It was out in the ocean and the tectonic plates crunching caused tsunamis in Japan and then many more that crossed the Pacific ocean through the night and into the day at the speed of a jetliner. The shoreline around us was evacuated starting around 4:30 AM with many RVs and other tourists rousted out of bed and ordered to leave the beach areas. All the beaches were closed but there was full coverage all day. The tsunamis were relative mild only between 2 and 8 feet but the water pulled back to the end of the piers and then flooded back many times throughout the morning. The evacuees were not allowed back until around noon when the emergency preparedness teams deemed it all clear. The Diablo Nuclear Power plant was in emergency mode and all the local emergency teams got a opportunity to test out their plans. After watching the first wave come and go, it looked like it wasn't going to amount to much so we went about our usual Friday routine. Fortunately there was only some minor damage to boats in the marinas. One man was killed in Santa Cruz I believe. He was out trying to take pictures and got washed away.
